Westerner Park expansion gets MPC approval

Major expansion is on the way for Westerner Park.

The City’s Municipal Planning Commission gave its approval Wednesday morning to a new 75,000 square foot multi-use space joining the Stockemens Pavilion and Agricentre to serve as an exhibit and trade show hall.

“This is about 50,000 square feet of space that Agri-Trade can actually program in 2018. So for us, we’re extremely happy about that because that helps us to expand Agri-Trade,” said Ben Antifaiff, CEO and General Manager at Westerner Park. “Certainly it will allow us to bid on and attract larger conventions, banquets and events. It’s the next asset that we need at the park in order to meet our future growth plans.”

The new building will include a second floor viewing area, as well as an outdoor terrace. It will also be Westerner Park’s new home for soccer bookings with room for a FIFA-regulation size indoor soccer pitch that can be moved out when other events are booked.

“We’ve got really great strong interest from the Red Deer City Soccer Association to use the facility during the winter months,” Antifaiff noted. “We have a plan for cabarets, banquets, conventions and it’s the next step in our master site plan that actually helps us to develop our venues for future activities at the site.”
